Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you have to earn over $22,000 per year to qualify?
Since this program provides you a refund of income taxes paid, we ask if your annual income is above $22,000 because that is usually the level above which people have to pay income taxes. Canadians who make less than $22,000 per year generally do not pay income tax, so it’s not worthwhile applying because there is no money to get back. However, if you’re not paying income tax, you can transfer the certificate to your spouse so they can claim the refund and tax credit in the future if they pay income taxes. You can also transfer it to another relative like a son or daughter who supports you financially, for them to claim the refund and tax credit in the future. We always review the tax situation of our clients to advise you which family member will benefit the most by claiming the tax credit.
Can a person really get back up to $50,000 in disability tax credits?
Yes it does happen some of the time. For example, when a child, adult or senior has significant medical expenses like Attendant Care that goes back for 10 years, being approved for the Disability Tax Credit allows you or a family member to now claim this and other medical expenses which were not previously claimable. The refund of medical expenses cannot exceed the amount of income tax paid, but if you or a family member paid more than $5,000 per year in taxes for 10 years, the refund can add up to $50,000. We always look at the tax situation and medical expenses of our clients to recommend the best way to maximize the claim.
There are many options on how to file and while one method may refund an elligble person $17,000, another method may get that same person $50,000, just by changing the options on how they file for the refund
Can I qualify for a Disability Tax Credit (DTC) even if I'm still working?
Absolutely. This is actually a common misunderstanding. You can be eligible for a DTC regardless of whether or not you are working.
How much do you charge for your service?
We charge 30% of the savings after you receive them and as always, if you don't save, you don't pay. If you do not receive a refund, there is no charge.
Can I do this on my own?
Yes, many people are certainly capable of doing this on their own. However, without experience, you may not know how to maximize your refund or steer things back on track when problems arise. Grants International is your advocate in the process. Whether it is a problem with your doctor or making sure that you choose the best filing method to maximize your refund, we’ve experienced it before and know exactly how to get things back on track for you to make sure you get the most money back from the government.
What if neither myself nor my spouse pay taxes?
If you live with a close relative or you have a son or daughter, for example, who provides you with food, shelter or clothing, then the tax credit is transferrable to them and they may be able to receive a refund.
